Eczema

More info on

Eczema

St. Louis individuals with “atopic dermatitis,” or eczema, have very sensitive skin that needs to be protected from irritation.

The following recommendations will help protect against dryness and irritation that leads to the itch/scratch cycle and flaring of eczema.  They may also be useful for individuals prone to dry, itchy skin.

  1. When bathing or showering, use warm (not hot) water and limit the time to 10 minutes.  No bubble baths.
  2. Use mild cleansers for bathing and washing hands.  See below for examples.
  3. After bathing, gently pat dry and avoid rubbing
  4. While still damp, moisturize all over.  In general, ointments are more moisturizing than creams which are more moisturizing than lotions.
  5. Wear 100% cotton clothing, particularly those items that touch the skin directly.  Avoid polyester or other synthetic fabrics and remove clothing tags which may further irritate the skin.
  6. Wash all clothing in unscented powder detergent.
  7. Avoid all fabric softeners and dryer sheets.
  8. Avoid scratching. This will create inflammation and worsens the itch-scratch cycle. Keep fingernails cut short and filed smooth.

Below are some recommendations for mild cleansers and moisturizers.  There is not a “one size fits all” when it comes to topical products.  You may have to try several before you find one that works best for you.
